‘GOOGLE’ BECOMES A ‘HOOVER’
Google has been named ‘word of the decade’ by American speech scholars. Not just because the company is omnipresent, but also because we now use it to mean ‘to search the internet for…’, i.e. “I’m just going to Google Eddy the Eagle Edwards’ shoe size”. Just like the way that we use ‘Hoover’ for vacuum cleaner (“Hoover the stairs Johnny!”) and the French use ‘Bic’ for ‘ballpoint pen’ (“Passez moi le Bic Jaque, s’il vous plait”), the brand has now overtaken the meaning. TRANSLATION CAN HELP FIGHT RECESSION – GET INTO FIGS!
It goes without saying that we’ve been through a tough time economically, but hopefully we’re coming out of it now! However, some of you may still be feeling the effects. Here are some reasons to use the power of translation to open up new markets… “An estimated 55% of UK trade is with Europe; economic recovery in Europe is therefore good news for UK business. In addition, the weak pound may actually aid recovery. Although painful during the summer holidays, the state of the sterling currently makes UK products and services more attractive to global consumers. Already we have seen evidence of increasing demand for British goods in foreign markets. Capitalising on these trends could potentially help to speed economic recovery in the UK.” For the full article (and to see what FIGS is if you don’t already know), visit: http://devt-of-enterprises.bestmanagementarticles.com/a-35082-how-translation-helps-business-survive-recession.aspx
STEP BY STEP FITNESS BY VOLKSWAGEN
Excellent video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_EIeSoH1iQ (1:47 long). Thanks to David Sealey at Quba (http://www.quba.co.uk/) for bringing this one to our attention!
TAKING LIVE UPDATES TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Also introduced to us by David as above, Trendsmap (http://trendsmap.com/) is a site that feeds Twitter updates overlaid on a map – basically, if you really want to know what people are tweeting about right now in Brazil, this is the place to visit. This type of communication is astounding – if we think that only 15 years ago mobile phones weren’t even in everyday use, and now we can see what a whole country is discussing in real time! As I’m writing now, the Olympics are definitely the hot topic across the world.
